How To Solve The Growing Problem Of Electronic Waste

Junk removal business has come a long way with Earthwise Hauling taking advantage of modern means of transportation and technology. Some junk hauling service providers are working independently while others have used the franchise model to take their business to the next level. Junk removal focuses on things that people no longer want from old refrigerators and television sets to computers and printers.

At a noisy recycling depot, a hauling company drops off a bunch of tangled wires, a broken coffee machine and a single clip-on light. Aside from hauling companies, residents in the London Borough of Southwark are dropping off broken and unwanted electrical devices.

At the depot, discarded items are either donated to charities for repair or shredded off into small parts for recycling. Once recycled, they make their way back to the market as components of new electronic devices. More than 95% of Southwark’s e-waste is diverted from landfills. Several hundred tonnes of electronic waste or e-waste from more than 140,000 homes are processed every year.

According to a 2017 report of the United Nation’s Global E-Waste Monitor, e-waste is the fastest growing material in the world’s domestic waste stream. This year, about 50 million metric tonnes were produced at about 7 kilograms per person. Sadly, only 20% of e-waste is collected and recycled.

Uncollected e-waste ends up in landfills, incinerated, traded illegally or processed in below standard plants. This means that the environment is being harmed by hazardous waste. E-waste is poisoning the ground and putting the health of people at risk. Once electronic equipment is no longer useful, it should not be dumped into the landfill because it can cause problems.

Defunct electronics have toxic substances that are considered as hazardous waste. Heavy metals like mercury, lead and cadmium can be found in LCD screens, refrigerators and air conditioners. These items when irresponsibly dumped can contaminate soil and pollute the waters.

Aside from junk removal and hauling, Earthwise Hauling also offers e-waste removal and recycling for more affordable prices. Trucks used can hold up to 15 cubic yards of junk, trash or debris and the prices offered for each truck load is 20% lower that national junk removal services.
